Essential Snow Camping Gear

Winter camping can be a lot of fun. Everything just sounds and smells different when the temperatures drop and there’s snow on the ground. If you’ve ever been camping in the winter then you know what I’m talking about. Even though it is definitely a good time you still need to be prepared.

Whether you’re heading out camping in the summer, spring, fall, or winter, there are essentials you should always carry with you. Check out our camping essentials here. To help get you up to speed, here are some items you should have with you no matter what season you’re camping during.

  1. Food and water
  2. Water filter or purifier
  3. Tent or another shelter
  4. Sleeping bag
  5. Clothing
  6. Firestarter, matches, and/or lighter
  7. Cooking equipment if needed
  8. Multi-tools
  9. Camping Knife
  10. First Aid kit
  11. Flashlight / lantern

If you’re heading out and there’s snow on the ground there are additional essentials you’ll want to be sure you have with you. These items differ from ones you would take with you if you were camping during one of the other 4 seasons. These items are especially true or only needed when camping in the winter.

Whether you pack snowshoes or skis you’ll want some type of tool that will you navigate and cross the snow-covered terrain. You could bring along a snowboard as well.

You should also be sure you pack a shovel with you just in case. There are many types of shovels that are collapsible and great for hiking or camping. You definitely won’t want to be caught needing to dig a hole and have to use your hands.

Additional clothing is pretty important too. Make sure the layers you have picked are heat-insulating. You should also bring hand and foot warmers as well. If you have zippers on your jacket you should have oversized zipper pulls so you are able to work them despite having heavy gloves or mittens on.

In addition to extra layers, you should also, if possible, have your clothing be moisture-wicking. Extra moisture can make you colder. Having insulated items will also help as well.  Your footwear is also pretty important. If snow and moisture are able to get into your boots and through your socks, you’re going to be pretty miserable. Be sure to spend the extra money on boots you know are durable and water-proof.

You’ll definitely want a winter tent. You can’t go winter camping ina regular spring/summer tent. I mean, you can, but you probably wouldn’t enjoy the experience. You’ll also need special sleeping bags that are cold-weather proof or heat-insulating.

Another item you might not think you need while winter camping is sunscreen – but that’s false. You can still get a sunburn from the winter sun. Don’t skip this item when you pack your bags. Also, throw in a pair of shades or a hat. The sun reflecting off the snow can definitely make it difficult to see.

Winer camping can be a really fun time, as long as you’re sure you have the necessities. Be sure to add extra winter items to your camping list if you plan on heading out during these months.
